COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Department of Meteorology says that fairly heavy showers exceeding 75 millimetres can be expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.Showers or thundershowers are likely in the Uva Province, as well as in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m.Fairly strong winds between 30–40 kmph may occur over the western slopes of the central hills, and across the Northern, North Central, North Western and Southern provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee district.The Met Department has advised the public to take precautions against lightning-related hazards.Meanwhile, wind speeds over sea areas extending from Kankesanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil, may increase up to 50–60 kmph.Wave heights in these sea areas are expected to rise between 2 to 3 metres.Fishermen and naval communities are urged to remain vigilant, the Department of Meteorology added.
