The Department of Meteorology has issued alerts for heavy showers exceeding 100 millimetres across several provinces as the southwest monsoon strengthens over Sri Lanka.

Showers surpassing 100 millimetres are expected in particular areas over the coming days, with rainy and windy conditions anticipated to escalate from tomorrow and persist throughout the week.
The heaviest precipitation is predicted for the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the districts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Galle. Additional intermittent showers and thunderstorms are likely across the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces. The Ampara, Batticaloa, and Monaragala districts may experience afternoon showers after 2:00 p.m.
Wind conditions will accompany the rainfall, with strong gusts between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour anticipated across the North Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, and North-Western provinces. Authorities have cautioned the public to implement protective measures against potential hazards stemming from strong winds and lightning strikes associated with thunderstorms.
