A mother elephant that was roaming majestically in the MHM Siyaj forest area has been found dead by the Wildlife Department officials. The autopsy has confirmed that the death of this elephant was not natural. This tragic incident took place in the Puttalam, Sellakandal forest area. During the autopsy of this mother elephant, who was about 35 to 40 years old and 8 feet tall, heartbreaking information came to light. The elephant had a 15-month-old, well-developed female baby elephant in its stomach. The fact that the baby, which was waiting to come to earth, had also died along with its mother has saddened everyone. This mother elephant is familiar to the Wildlife Department officials. The officials have treated the injuries on the legs of this elephant that had been roaming in this area for the past several months. This sudden death of the elephant, which was under such close surveillance, has raised serious doubts. The elephant's legs had been shot in the past. Wildlife Department officials have expressed suspicion in the initial investigations that the mother and calf may have died due to a deadly infection (poisoning) that spread through the gunshot wounds. A medical team led by the Medical Officer of the Nikaveratiya Veterinary Office, Ms. A.M.B.M. Asasuriya, conducted a complete post-mortem examination of this tragic incident. It is a matter of condemnation and concern that yet another mother and calf have fallen victim to the ruthless actions of humans.
