State Counsel Keshani Wijesinghe, appearing for the Attorney General, stated in the Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate’s Court that the Attorney General’s Department is continuously monitoring the ongoing police investigations into the alleged serious abuse of a minor by the former Anuradhapura Attamadhipathi Pallegama Hemarathana Thero. The State Counsel, appearing for the first time on behalf of the Attorney General’s Department, stated this when the case was taken up for re-hearing before Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Siyapath Sasindu Wickramaratne today (26). During the hearing of the case, the Magistrate inquired from the Nittambuwa Headquarters Police regarding the progress of the investigations. In response, the Chief Inspector of Police of the Nittambuwa Headquarters, P.M. Anura Gunawardena said, “The first DNA report regarding the incident has already been received; the second report will be available soon.” He also stated that the mobile phone analysis reports of the suspect Venerable Thero, the victim girl and the girl’s mother have been received and submitted to the court. He also requested the court to grant another date for further investigations. President’s Counsel Kalinga Indratissa, appearing for the suspect Venerable Pallegama Hemarathana Thero, stated, “Since this case is currently under investigation, we do not wish to make any special submissions. We agree to grant the date requested by the police to report on the progress of the investigations.” The probation officer who is caring for the victim girl, while commenting in court, stated, “The girl is currently undergoing psychological counseling and is very safe under the custody of the probation department.” When the probation officer attempted to reveal where the girl was currently being held, the Chief Magistrate advised him not to disclose it in order to protect the confidentiality of the location.
