Finance company Siyapatha Finance PLC has concluded its 2026 Sri Pada Cleaning Project, removing nearly a tonne of plastic waste from the UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of its environmental conservation efforts.
Siyapatha Finance PLC has completed its annual cleaning initiative at Sri Pada, collecting approximately one tonne of plastic and polythene waste during the single-day operation. The project, which coincided with the company's 21st anniversary and World Environment Day celebrations, combined both corrective measures and preventive awareness activities, encouraging visitors to participate in preserving the sacred site through responsible waste management.
Sri Pada, the country's third largest peak wilderness sanctuary, holds significant ecological importance as the natural habitat for roughly 8% of Sri Lanka's indigenous flora and fauna, alongside numerous endangered species. The site encompasses three distinct ecological zones—Lowland Rainforest, Sub-montane Rainforest, and Cloud Forest—and serves as a critical water source for three major rivers: Kelani, Kalu, and Walawe. Designated a Wildlife Nature Reserve in 1940 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, Sri Pada attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists annually.
The cleaning operation involved over 50 Siyapatha Finance staff members, including Chief Executive Officer Mathisha Hewavitharana and senior management, working under the guidance of the Chief Incumbent of Sri Pada and with support from local authorities. According to the CEO, the company views environmental sustainability as integral to long-term business success, emphasizing the collaborative impact of such initiatives on national development.
The Sri Pada Cleaning Project is part of Siyapatha Finance's "Siyapathen Mihikathata Green Initiative," launched in 2024 as the company's corporate social responsibility strategy focused on environmental conservation. The project has become an established annual event on the company's calendar, bringing communities together to protect Sri Lanka's historical and natural heritage.
