The Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology has secured membership in an international network of entrepreneurial universities led by the UK-based National Centre for Entrepreneurship Education, positioning itself alongside institutions like the University of Edinburgh.

The Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Sri Lankan university to join the Global Alliance of Entrepreneurial Universities. The alliance, convened by the UK-based National Centre for Entrepreneurship Education (NCEE), brings together higher education institutions from multiple continents with a shared focus on promoting entrepreneurship, innovation and enterprise across academic communities.

The membership places SLIIT in the company of globally recognised universities including the University of Edinburgh and the University of Warwick. According to SLIIT's Vice Chancellor and CEO Professor Lalith Gamage, the membership represents an important step in the university's international engagement and reflects the institution's commitment to developing innovative thinkers and transforming knowledge into practical solutions. The NCEE, established in 2004, works to strengthen institutional leadership and support innovation capable of generating economic growth and societal benefit.

Through the alliance, SLIIT will engage with an international community of universities on shared priorities including graduate employability, innovation, sustainability and the future of work. The membership provides opportunities to participate in global projects, roundtable discussions and collaborative initiatives. According to Dr. Dilan Fernando, Director of SLIIT Innovate, the international network will enable academics, researchers and students to exchange proven practices and collaborate on initiatives while sharing Sri Lanka's own innovation ecosystem with the wider network.

SLIIT's participation builds on its existing focus on research and industry engagement, with the institution reporting a 98% employment rate among graduates. The university currently operates three Centres of Excellence focused on Artificial Intelligence, Intelligent Electronics and Telematics, and Sustainability and Green Innovation. The alliance membership is expected to strengthen pathways through which students and researchers can develop ideas into practical ventures.
