The government has initiated a formal investigation into comments made by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam, which officials claim suggested a potential threat to the Inspector General of Police.
Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has characterized remarks made by SLPP General Secretary Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam at a media briefing as an extremely serious matter requiring mandatory investigation. According to the government official, the statements appeared to reference the possibility of the country's top police officer being killed in public, a concern that cannot be dismissed as casual commentary.
Dr. Jayatissa emphasized that the timing and nature of the remarks warrant scrutiny. He noted that the current Inspector General of Police is actively conducting operations targeting organized crime, underworld networks, drug trafficking, and illicit financial activities, resulting in numerous arrests and remand orders. Against this backdrop, the Cabinet Spokesman argued that statements made by a political party leader and former Member of Parliament suggesting harm could come to the police chief demand serious investigation.
The Minister stressed that the statement appeared deliberate, delivered during a formal media briefing rather than as an unscripted comment. Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala has already indicated that an inquiry would proceed into the matter. The Colombo Central Crimes Investigation Bureau has launched a special investigation to examine both the statement itself and the surrounding circumstances and implications, according to government authorities.
