Sri Lankan authorities have prohibited small fishing boats from operating along a stretch of the western coast due to forecasts of extreme weather conditions, with wind speeds potentially reaching 70 km/h.

The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has issued an immediate ban on small and one-day fishing boats operating along the coastline from Jaffna to Beruwala, citing deteriorating weather conditions expected to affect the island. The prohibition follows a warning from the Department of Meteorology regarding persistent rainfall and strong winds anticipated to impact the western coast beginning the night of July 31.

Director General Susantha Kahawatta of the Fisheries Department issued an urgent safety advisory warning that wind speeds in affected coastal areas could reach up to 70 km/h, creating rough sea conditions and high waves that would endanger smaller vessels. The affected coastal districts include Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Puttalam, Chilaw, Negombo, Colombo, and Kalutara up to Beruwala.

The Department has instructed all small fishing boats already at sea to return immediately to the nearest safe harbour. Kahawatta stressed that wind speeds are expected to intensify further during nighttime hours and urged fishermen to remain vigilant and closely monitor subsequent advisories. Operators have been cautioned against taking unnecessary risks and advised to prioritize the safety of personnel, vessels, and equipment. The ban remains in effect until further notice from the Department.
