Sri Lanka's Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has advised small fishing vessels to remain ashore as dangerous sea conditions are expected along the southern coast from Matara to Pottuvil.
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has issued an urgent advisory warning small and one-day fishing vessels against venturing into waters stretching from Matara to Pottuvil, following dangerous weather predictions released by the Department of Meteorology. The warning comes as strong winds are expected to create rough to very rough sea conditions in the region.
According to the fisheries advisory, wind speeds in the affected sea area, which extends from Matara through Hambantota to Pottuvil, could reach up to 70 kilometers per hour at times. These hazardous conditions pose a serious threat to coastal fishing operations, prompting authorities to recommend that small fishing vessels operating from the affected areas remain ashore until conditions improve.
The advisory extends beyond local fishers. Fishing vessels departing from other parts of Sri Lanka have been instructed to avoid conducting fishing activities within the designated high-risk zone, even if their home areas are not currently experiencing severe weather. The Department has urged all fishermen to monitor weather updates closely and adhere strictly to safety instructions while at sea to ensure their protection during these challenging maritime conditions.
