The Sri Lanka Spa Association says it has lodged complaints with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), alleging police harassment of licensed spa establishments and calling for an impartial investigation into recent incidents. Representative claimed that several spas operating with licences issued by the Tourism Ministry and staffed by qualified therapists had been subjected to police action, making it difficult for them to continue operating. “Police have been using their powers unlawfully, making it impossible for licensed establishments to continue operating. If we cannot run our businesses despite having Tourism Ministry licences and certified therapists, what are we supposed to do?” an Association representative said. The Association also alleged that after submitting a complaint to the IGP regarding the treatment of female workers and the industry, several member establishments were targeted in apparent retaliation. “A conspiracy is afoot to destroy the businesses of our Association’s office-bearers. One establishment has been destroyed by fire, while the Acting President’s spa in Wattala was also set on fire. We have serious suspicions that these are acts of revenge,” the representative said, questioning if the moves were intended to exert pressure on the government. The Association stressed that it does not defend businesses operating unlawfully, but called on authorities to regulate and support licensed establishments rather than disrupt their operations. “We are not here to protect those operating illegally. We only stand for businesses that operate lawfully and want the authorities to regulate the industry properly,” the representative added. The Association said it had previously lodged a complaint with the HRCSL over an incident in Thalawathugoda involving spa employees and has now sought an impartial investigation from both the Police Department and the HRCSL. It also noted that nearly one million people depend on the spa industry for their livelihoods. “Around one million people depend on this industry. Many are doing these jobs because they have no other means of earning a living. We are asking for an independent and impartial investigation into these incidents,” the representative said.
