Authorities have initiated a special operation to retrieve firearms linked to Lalith Kannangara, known as 'Bus Lalith,' who was recently extradited from Dubai and is now in police custody.
A coordinated police operation has been launched to locate and recover firearms associated with Lalith Kannangara, an organized crime figure commonly referred to as 'Bus Lalith.' The suspect was arrested in Dubai and transported back to Sri Lanka early this week, where he is currently undergoing interrogation.
According to police statements, the weapons recovery effort is based on information obtained during questioning of Kannangara under a 72-hour detention order. Investigators with the Colombo Central Crime Investigation Bureau are directing the broader inquiry into the suspect's criminal activities.
During initial interrogation, authorities allege that Kannangara confessed to multiple criminal enterprises. Police claim he engaged in an extortion racket targeting business proprietors across various regions, including the Hanwella area, where he allegedly extracted protection payments from small business owners. Additionally, investigators assert that Kannangara was involved in drug trafficking operations and allegedly defrauded other drug traffickers of substantial sums exceeding hundreds of millions of rupees.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to verify the suspect's statements and recover the associated weaponry.
