Sri Lankan authorities conducted a quality inspection of consumer goods at Pettah market, examining food items, electrical appliances, and toys for compliance with national standards as part of National Integrity Week initiatives.

The Ministry of Science and Technology orchestrated a comprehensive inspection of consumer products at Pettah market on 28 January, coinciding with National Integrity Week observances. The programme aimed to assess whether items currently available for purchase meet established quality and safety standards applicable across the country.

Inspectors examined a broad range of consumer goods including food products, electrical appliances, and toys. A primary focus of the inspection involved testing food items to detect any harmful substances that could endanger public health. According to Minister of Science and Technology Professor Krishantha Abeysena, determining whether products comply with required standards represented a central objective of the exercise.

Multiple government agencies participated in the inspection effort. Officials from institutions operating under the Ministry of Science and Technology, including the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) and the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), worked alongside other relevant agencies to conduct the quality assessments. Beyond enforcement activities, the inspection programme incorporated an educational component designed to inform consumers about product quality standards while simultaneously raising awareness among traders and business operators about compliance requirements.
