Sri Lanka Police have announced a comprehensive security and traffic management scheme for the fourth Kumbal Perahera of the 2026 Kandy Esala Perahera, which begins tomorrow evening at 6:40 p.m.
The fourth procession of the ongoing Kandy Esala Perahera will commence tomorrow from the Sri Dalada Maligawa and traverse a route spanning approximately 1.27 kilometers through Dalada Veediya, Katugodalla Veediya, and Raja Veediya before returning to the temple.
To manage traffic during the event, Sri Lanka Police have established multiple alternative routes across Kandy city. Heavy vehicles from Katugastota will be redirected through Mahaiyawa Junction via Thilak Ratnayake Mawatha to Police Junction, while light vehicles can use D.S. Senanayake Street and Yatinuwara Street. Vehicles heading toward Tennekumbura and Ampitiya are advised to use Rajapihilla Mawatha Junction via Church Road, with further routing options through Clock Tower Roundabout and Sangaraja Mawatha.
Beyond traffic management, authorities have implemented a broader security framework encompassing roadblocks, security checkpoints, and vehicle and pedestrian inspections. The plan also includes provisions for tourist assistance and designated parking arrangements to facilitate the large crowds expected to attend the event. Police have urged the public to adhere to traffic regulations and utilize the designated alternative routes throughout the duration of the procession.
The Kandy Esala Perahera runs from August 18 through August 28, 2026, and represents one of the island's most significant cultural events, drawing participants and spectators from across Sri Lanka and internationally.
