Authorities have begun releasing excess water from the Kotmale Gamini Dissanayake Reservoir after its water level approached maximum capacity, prompting safety alerts for downstream residents.
The Major Dams and Reservoir Operations Division of the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority opened the spill gates of the Kotmale Gamini Dissanayake Reservoir on Tuesday evening as water accumulation reached near-maximum levels. The controlled release began at 7:00 p.m., with approximately 20 cubic metres of excess water discharged per second into the Kotmala Oya.
The discharge is expected to cause water levels in both the Kotmala Oya and the downstream Mahaweli River to rise moderately. Authorities cautioned that residents in areas adjacent to these waterways should remain alert and monitor conditions closely for any changes.
Relevant officials have requested that communities in potentially affected zones be notified promptly of the water release and advised to adhere to all safety guidance issued by dam management authorities. The precautionary measures reflect standard protocols employed when reservoir operations require water discharge due to capacity constraints.
