Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Cambodia visited Phnom Penh to deepen bilateral relations, address the welfare of Sri Lankan nationals in the country, and explore expanded cooperation in trade, tourism and cultural exchanges.
Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Cambodia, E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, conducted a series of high-level meetings in Phnom Penh aimed at reinforcing the two nations' diplomatic relationship and supporting Sri Lankan nationals residing there. During the visit, the Ambassador met with Cambodia's Permanent Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, EAT Sophea, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties that have existed since 1952. The discussions highlighted shared cultural and religious heritage, particularly within the Theravada Buddhist tradition, as a foundation for cooperation.
The two governments identified several priority areas for expanded engagement, including trade and investment, tourism development, and cultural initiatives. Sri Lanka expressed particular interest in promoting economic linkages and facilitating greater interaction between business communities of both countries. Both sides discussed the potential for enhanced tourism cooperation, with emphasis on religious and cultural tourism opportunities. Additionally, Sri Lanka proposed convening the First Round of Bilateral Political Consultations before the end of 2026, pursuant to a 2019 Memorandum of Understanding.
A significant focus of the Ambassador's visit involved addressing the situation of Sri Lankan nationals in Cambodia, particularly those in custody. Meetings were held with Cambodia's Consular Affairs Division regarding the status, welfare and repatriation of affected individuals. The Ambassador also coordinated with the International Organization for Migration to discuss support mechanisms for stranded Sri Lankans and explore options including potential waiver of visa overstay fines to facilitate their return.
The visit also marked engagement with the Sri Lankan community through a newly established Honorary Consulate. The Ambassador encouraged community members to strengthen connections with the Embassy and leverage their professional networks to advance bilateral trade and investment. Discussions explored establishing a Sri Lanka Business Chamber in Cambodia as a platform for commercial cooperation. The appointment of Pily Wong as the first Honorary Consul is expected to enhance Sri Lanka's institutional presence and facilitate closer community engagement.
