ECONOMYNEXT – Compensation of 1 million rupees each will be allocated for 4 more patients who experienced vision loss due to using the Prednisolone Acetate ophthalmic liquid medication when admitted for eye surgeries at hospitals, Nalinda Jayatissa, Minister of Health and Mass Media said. “When our government was first appointed, we gave 17 affected patients Rs.1 million each,” the minister said. The issue occurred between 03 March 2023 and 16 May 2023, with 17 patients admitted at the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital experiencing vision loss. Following investigations into other hospitals in that same period, 4 more patients who suffered from vision loss were identified as eligible for compensation. (Colombo/July07/2026)
