The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs has referred an alleged network involving the trade of private photographs and sexual content of women and children to law enforcement, following reports of suspicious activity across social media platforms.

Sri Lankan authorities are investigating an alleged underground network where private photographs and sexual content involving women and children are being bought and sold through social media groups, according to the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs. The ministry stated it had identified multiple groups operating across various platforms where such material was reportedly being exchanged.

Initial examinations revealed that fake accounts were being used to advertise photographs and videos, often sourced from the account holders' own social circles. In some cases, individuals appeared to be distributing intimate material of women from their own families without consent. The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs noted that many of these groups appeared to be managed from locations outside Sri Lanka.

Following preliminary inquiries, the ministry has escalated its findings to the Sri Lanka Police Children and Women Bureau and the Computer Crime Investigation Division for formal investigation. The authorities have emphasised the urgency of addressing this issue and have committed to taking swift action to protect vulnerable individuals.

In response, the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs has urged parents to exercise greater vigilance over their children's online activities and to monitor who their children interact with on social media. Those who suspect a family member may be involved in or victimised by such activity can contact toll-free helplines 1938 and 1929 for assistance.
