default The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) today officially commissioned a solar photovoltaic (PV) system that will meet nearly 70% of the authority’s electricity requirements through renewable energy. The project was inaugurated by Minister of Ports, Civil Aviation and Energy Anura Karunatilaka at the invitation of CAASL Director General and Chief Executive Officer Capt. Daminda Rambukwella. According to the authority, surplus electricity generated by the system will be supplied to the national grid, contributing to the country’s energy security while supporting environmental sustainability. The project is part of the Civil Aviation Authority’s efforts to align with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) policies on sustainability, green aviation, energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. Capt. Rambukwella said the authority remains committed to implementing ICAO’s green aviation and sustainable development principles, adding that the solar project will help reduce carbon emissions while promoting an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient aviation sector. The authority said the initiative also reinforces Sri Lanka’s commitment to promoting green aviation and achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). (Newswire)
