Sri Lanka Cricket hosted 160 Mass Communication students from the University of Kelaniya at an international cricket match to provide practical experience in sports journalism and media operations.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) organised an educational field visit for 160 students from the University of Kelaniya's Mass Communication Department, offering them direct exposure to professional sports media work. The visit took place at the RPICS in Colombo during the Sri Lanka versus India Under-19 Second Four-Day Game, allowing participants to observe international cricket coverage in action.
During their time at the venue, students participated in a structured learning programme that combined classroom instruction with practical application. The SLC Media Unit delivered a presentation on professional standards in sports journalism, followed by an interactive question-and-answer session. Participants gained firsthand experience in multiple aspects of cricket media coverage, including press box operations, live reporting techniques, and sports photography practices.
A key component of the visit involved direct engagement with working professionals. Students had the opportunity to interact with photographers and journalists actively covering the international match, gaining insight into the technical demands and professional standards required in sports media. These conversations provided context for the challenges faced by those working in the field.
SLC characterised the initiative as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility efforts, positioning the programme as a bridge between academic learning and practical industry experience. The organisation stated that the project aims to develop future media professionals while contributing to national development through enhanced training opportunities for students entering the communications field.
