Sri Lanka has formally extended the service of its Honorary Consul in Tyrol, Austria, with discussions focused on strengthening economic and cultural ties between the two regions.
The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva recently presented an extension of service to Christian Steppan, who serves as Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in the Austrian region of Tyrol. The formal recognition came during a meeting held on August 12.
According to the Honorary Consulate of Sri Lanka in Tyrol, the discussions centred on expanding bilateral relations and fostering cultural exchanges. Officials from both sides emphasised the potential for deeper economic cooperation and highlighted opportunities within the hospitality and tourism sectors, where both regions have established expertise.
Steppan outlined several proposals aimed at raising Sri Lanka's profile within the Tyrol region and facilitating stronger trade connections. The focus included strengthening business-to-business contacts and developing professional collaboration between relevant industries in both territories.
The extension of the Honorary Consul's mandate reflects Sri Lanka's commitment to strengthening its diplomatic and commercial presence in Central Europe. The consulate's role is seen as instrumental in advancing bilateral institutional relationships and supporting economic initiatives between Sri Lanka and the Austrian region.
