Sri Lanka participated in a historic global space education program that set a world record for the most nationalities represented, with Dr. Sulochana Segera and student Seneesa Goonewardena representing the country at the event in India.
Sri Lanka has joined a significant global achievement in space education, with the country represented at a landmark event organized by Space Kidz India. On 28 August, Mission ShakthiSAT brought together young women from 108 nations at Gautam Buddha University in India, setting a new world record for the most nationalities participating in a women's space education program.
The South Asian nation's involvement was facilitated through the Women in Management Global (WIM Global) initiative, which focuses on advancing girls' participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Dr. Sulochana Segera, founder and chairperson of WIM Global, served as Sri Lanka's ambassador for the mission, while student Seneesa Goonewardena represented the country's younger generation at the gathering.
According to organizers, the record-breaking participation demonstrates the growing recognition of the need to provide girls with access to STEM education and create opportunities for young women in space technology and science fields. Segera emphasized that the milestone extends beyond scientific achievement, noting that the initiative aims to foster confidence among girls about their place in future technological advancement. She stated that participation represents an important moment for Sri Lanka in positioning its young generation within a global movement that encourages girls to pursue careers in science and space exploration.
