The Sri Lanka Navy seized an Indian fishing vessel and arrested nine fishermen on August 12 after they allegedly crossed into Sri Lankan waters and engaged in unauthorised bottom trawling off Talaimannar.
The Sri Lanka Navy intercepted an Indian fishing trawler and apprehended nine fishermen during an operation on August 12 for what authorities describe as illegal fishing activities in Sri Lankan territorial waters. The vessel was detected near Urumalei Point off Talaimannar after crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and engaging in bottom trawling operations.
According to the Navy, the Gulf of Mannar region surrounding Mannar Island and Adam's Bridge is designated as a high-priority area for marine biodiversity conservation and is subject to strict fisheries management regulations. The seizure is part of enforcement efforts to protect this ecologically sensitive zone from unauthorised fishing practices.
Following the interception, both the detained fishermen and the seized trawler have been transferred to the Fisheries Inspector's office in Mannar for legal proceedings. The case will now move through the appropriate judicial channels to determine what penalties or charges may apply.
