Sri Lanka has officially opened an Honorary Consulate in Cambodia, aiming to boost trade, investment, tourism and diplomatic ties between the two nations while providing consular services to Sri Lankan nationals.
Sri Lanka marked the official opening of its Honorary Consulate in Cambodia on Wednesday, with officials from both countries emphasizing the facility's role in deepening economic and cultural cooperation. The new office will serve as a hub for promoting bilateral trade, investment opportunities, and tourism while offering consular support to Sri Lankan citizens in the kingdom.
Honorary Consul Pily Wong outlined plans to facilitate business partnerships and cross-border investment, stating that the consulate would function as a welcoming resource for the Sri Lankan community. Ambassador E.A.S Wijayanthi Edirisinghe characterized the inauguration as establishing a permanent diplomatic bridge between the nations. She highlighted recent momentum in bilateral relations, including high-level political exchanges and a 2024 business delegation visit led by the Greater Mekong Business Council of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. According to Edirisinghe, Sri Lankan exports to Cambodia grew substantially in 2024, encompassing apparel, rubber products, electronic equipment, tea, and food items.
Cambodia's Un Kheang, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, affirmed his government's support for the consulate's mission. He noted that both countries have demonstrated consistent backing for one another in regional and multilateral forums, reflecting shared values around dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution. Kheang identified significant untapped potential for expanding cooperation across trade, investment, tourism, education, culture, and digital innovation.
Both nations emphasized that the Honorary Consulate represents a strategic initiative to unlock economic opportunities while strengthening the long-standing spiritual and cultural bonds rooted in Buddhist heritage that connect the two countries.
