The Sri Lanka Police will commemorate 160 years of service on September 3, 2026, with island-wide events including public exhibitions, awareness campaigns, and community programmes designed to strengthen ties between the force and citizens.
The Sri Lanka Police is preparing an extensive celebration to mark 160 years since the institution's establishment on September 3, 1866, during the British colonial era. A grand ceremony will be held at the Police Field Force Headquarters, with the Inspector General of Police overseeing a range of coordinated activities throughout the country.
Public awareness campaigns launched on August 28 are utilizing television, electronic and print media to showcase the Police's services and encourage community cooperation. The campaigns aim to highlight the role of law enforcement in Sri Lankan society and foster greater public engagement with the institution.
A significant component of the anniversary will be a three-day public exhibition at the Police Field Force Headquarters from September 4 to 6, operating from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm daily. The exhibition will feature information stalls from various police divisions focused on legal awareness and public services, alongside interactive demonstrations including motorcycle displays, parachute demonstrations, horse shows and police dog exhibitions. Evening entertainment will include musical concerts running from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm each day, with attractions specifically designed for children and young people.
Beyond the headquarters events, police divisions and stations across the country have independently organized community-oriented programmes for the anniversary. According to the Police, these initiatives are intended to deepen public engagement, build mutual understanding and strengthen the relationship between the force and the communities they serve.
