Overall inflation in Sri Lanka increased to 7.3% in July 2026, driven primarily by a significant jump in food costs, according to official statistics released Thursday.
Sri Lanka's inflation rate climbed to 7.3% in July on a year-on-year basis, marking an uptick from the 6.8% recorded in June, according to data from the Department of Census and Statistics. The Colombo Consumer Price Index showed the month-on-month acceleration across the broader economy.
Food inflation emerged as the primary driver of the increase, surging to 6.3% in July from 3.6% in June—nearly doubling within a single month. This sharp rise in food-related costs represents a notable concern for household budgets across the country.
The non-food inflation segment, however, moved in the opposite direction, declining to 7.8% in July from 8.4% in June. This moderation in non-food prices provided some offset to the overall inflationary pressure, though it was insufficient to prevent the month-on-month increase in headline inflation.
The data underscores ongoing price pressures in the Sri Lankan economy, with food costs presenting the most immediate challenge to consumers and policymakers alike.
