The Colombo Stock Exchange benchmark index declined marginally on Tuesday, with retailing leading market turnover despite mixed performance across individual stocks.

However, the more actively traded S&P SL20 index bucked the trend, rising 0.07 percent to 5,944.52 points. Overall market turnover reached 2.96 billion rupees, with the retailing sector accounting for 1.08 billion rupees of that volume.

Holdings led declines with a 6.56 percent drop to 470 rupees, while Sampath Bank and Hatton National Bank also posted losses. L.B. Finance, which recently completed its amalgamation with Associated Motor Finance Company following shareholder approval in June, closed down 0.63 percent at 158.75 rupees.

Separately, Fitch Ratings affirmed Lion Brewery (Ceylon) PLC's National Long-Term Rating of AAA (lka) with a stable outlook before withdrawing the rating for commercial reasons. Fitch cited Lion's dominant position in Sri Lanka's beer market, where it generated over 90 percent of revenue domestically in the year to March 2026, alongside exports to Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. The ratings agency noted that while competition is expected to intensify as a leading spirits manufacturer enters beer production, new competitors will face significant barriers including a complete ban on alcohol advertising.
