The Derana Digital Colombo International Kite Festival 2026 is set to run as a week-long event featuring kite flyers from 30 countries and over 1,500 local participants, marking a 30 percent increase in international involvement compared to previous years.
Sri Lanka is preparing to welcome approximately 80 international kite flyers from 30 countries alongside more than 1,500 domestic participants for the Derana Digital Colombo International Kite Festival 2026. The event, which has grown from a single-day celebration into a comprehensive week-long programme, represents a significant expansion in the country's cultural tourism offerings.
The festival schedule encompasses multiple activities scheduled throughout Colombo from Thursday through Sunday. Highlights include a welcome ceremony for international delegates on Thursday, an official press conference on Friday, and a vintage vehicle parade featuring approximately 200 classic cars alongside international kite flyers on Saturday morning. The main festival activities take place at Galle Face Green on Sunday, with organizers introducing Sri Lanka's first night kite festival featuring illuminated kites in the evening. A musical concert by popular Sri Lankan artists will accompany the celebrations.
Organizers have emphasized the event's role in promoting cultural exchange and tourism. According to Derana Media Network Chief Operating Officer Madhawa Madawala, the festival aims to convey a message that "Sri Lanka is open, welcoming, ready to welcome visitors from every corner of the globe." International participants, including a Thai kite educator, have highlighted how such events foster international friendship and cultural understanding.
Prior to the main festival, organizers conducted preparatory workshops for over 630 children aged 8 to 15 years, led by expert kite flyers from Australia, France, and China. The Sri Lanka Police has announced extensive security measures, deploying 1,000 officers including 300 for traffic management and 200 plainclothes personnel. Special parade routes and dedicated parking areas have been designated across the city to manage the anticipated crowds.
