The Ministry of Transport and Highways has announced plans to expand Sri Lanka's expressway network by 132 kilometers through four major projects, with construction expected to conclude by 2030.

Sri Lanka's expressway infrastructure is set to undergo significant expansion over the coming years, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Transport and Highways. The country aims to add 132 kilometers of new expressway routes by 2030 through the completion of four interconnected projects across different regions.

Two expressway sections are already under active construction. The Kadawatha–Meerigama section of the Central Expressway's first phase spans 37 kilometers, while the Pothuhera–Galagedara section of the third phase covers 33 kilometers. According to the Ministry, construction on the Kurunegala–Dambulla Expressway Project is scheduled to commence before the end of 2026, beginning with the Kurunegala–Galewela section, which will extend 38 kilometers. Additionally, the 24-kilometer Ruwanpura Expressway Project is planned to start this year.

The Kurunegala–Dambulla project carries an estimated cost of Rs. 233 billion and will be executed through a transparent tender process divided into 12 separate packages. The Ministry has emphasized that local construction companies will undertake the rapid development of these routes. A distinguishing feature of these initiatives is the reliance on domestic government funding rather than foreign sources, marking the first instance of Sri Lanka financing expressway development entirely through local resources, according to the Ministry announcement.
