The Cabinet has greenlit the establishment of a new renewable energy training facility under the Ceylon German Technical Training Institute in the Walawa Zone, aimed at developing skilled professionals for the expanding clean energy sector.

Sri Lanka's Cabinet has authorized the construction of a dedicated renewable energy training centre with a budget of Rs. 398 million. The facility will operate as an affiliated branch of the Ceylon German Technical Training Institute (CGTTI) and will be situated on a 3.11-hectare plot in the Mayurapura Division of Walawa Zone, land currently held by the Mahaweli Authority.

The initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding established in February 2025 between CGTTI and the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA), reflecting growing recognition of the need for qualified personnel in renewable energy fields. The training centre's location has been strategically chosen near the Kiribbanwewa Floating Solar Power Plant and SLSEA's existing Hambantota Training Centre, positioning it to offer students practical learning opportunities alongside classroom instruction.

The proposed facility is positioned as part of a wider renewable energy training hub designed to produce technical professionals qualified in multiple disciplines. Curriculum areas will encompass energy efficiency, electrical and mechanical engineering, and specialized training in solar, wind, hydropower, and biomass energy technologies. Prime Minister and Minister of Education Harini Amarasuriya presented the proposal, which received Cabinet approval for implementation using domestic funding sources.
