Sri Lanka will host the South East Asia Rotaract Information Centre Summit in mid-September, while the country grapples with inflation reaching an eight-year high of 8.0 percent in August, driven largely by food price increases and fuel cost adjustments.

Sri Lanka will host the SEARIC Summit from September 11 to 13 at the Pegasus Reef Hotel, marking the first time the country has hosted the South East Asia Rotaract Information Centre's flagship regional event. The three-day gathering is expected to attract over 500 delegates from six countries to discuss "The Role of Technology in the Future of Careers and Services." According to the organisers, Sri Lanka has emerged as a significant player in Rotaract globally, hosting the eighth-largest membership base with more than 4,500 members across 85 active clubs. The event aims to position the nation as a destination for international conferences through showcasing its hospitality capabilities.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's economy is confronting mounting inflationary pressures, with the Colombo Consumer Price Index rising to 8.0 percent in August 2026, exceeding the Central Bank's 7 percent upper target for a second consecutive month. Food inflation has accelerated sharply to 8.5 percent year-on-year, the highest rate since May 2023, driven by recent fuel price increases of nearly 50 percent following supply constraints linked to Middle East tensions and elevated global oil prices. Non-food inflation eased slightly to 7.7 percent, while core inflation climbed to 5.5 percent from 4.4 percent previously.

On the positive front, the government is pursuing broader economic development initiatives. The World Bank has approved a 200 million dollar concessional loan to develop the tourism sector, with 77 million dollars allocated to the "Thrive Colombo" project aimed at increasing visitor spending in the capital. Additionally, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake convened high-level talks to chart a roadmap for the mineral sector under the new National Mineral Policy 2026, focusing on establishing mechanisms for exploration and downstream value addition. However, environmental groups have raised concerns about balancing commercial extraction with ecological safeguards.
