The government has announced plans to introduce Sri Lanka's first dedicated motorcycle lane in Kaluwanchikudy as part of broader efforts to reduce accidents involving two-wheeled vehicles.
Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake revealed the initiative during the launch of the "100 for 100" National Corporate Motorcycle Safety Programme on August 3rd. The dedicated lane represents a targeted response to the ongoing road safety challenges posed by motorcycle accidents in the country.
The proposed motorcycle lane will be physically separated from general traffic using rubber dividers and has already been designed, according to the Minister. Implementation is expected to commence in the coming months. The government cited international examples, particularly Malaysia, where similar dedicated lanes have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing accident rates among motorcycle riders.
Kaluwanchikudy was selected as the location for this pilot project due to its high concentration of motorcycle users. Officials indicated that if the initiative proves successful, the concept may be expanded to other regions across the country.
The announcement was made during the launch of the "100 for 100" programme, a joint initiative by the National Council for Road Safety and Hayleys Advantis Ltd. This programme aims to engage 100 private sector institutions, with each organisation committing to support 100 motorcycle riders through road safety awareness and training activities.
