Sri Lanka has exceeded 1.4 million tourist arrivals by early August 2026, marking continued recovery in the tourism sector. India remains the primary source of visitors, followed by the United Kingdom and France.

Sri Lanka's tourism sector has demonstrated robust growth this year, with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority reporting 1,408,620 tourist arrivals by August 9. This milestone reflects the ongoing recovery of the island nation's tourism industry during the first eight months of 2026.

India continues to dominate as the leading source market, accounting for 351,713 arrivals year-to-date, followed by the United Kingdom with 137,861 visitors and China with 92,940 arrivals. During the first nine days of August alone, India contributed 13,483 tourists, the highest among all source countries during that period, with the United Kingdom recording 7,460 and France 5,388 arrivals.

Monthly trends indicate seasonal variations in visitor numbers, with February emerging as the peak month, attracting 279,328 tourists. The early August period saw 65,202 arrivals across the nine-day window, maintaining the positive momentum observed throughout the year. The sustained growth across multiple source markets suggests strengthening international confidence in Sri Lanka as a tourism destination.
