Sri Lankan authorities have warned of a developing El Niño event in the Pacific that could strengthen in coming months, prompting calls for prudent water management and coordinated national preparedness.

The Department of Meteorology has alerted the public to prepare for potential impacts from an El Niño phenomenon currently developing in the Pacific Ocean region. While the weather pattern remains weak at present, meteorological experts have cautioned that it could intensify gradually over the following months. Director of Forecasting Meril Mendis stated there is a "strong possibility" the phenomenon could develop into a more intense condition, urging residents to conserve water and manage existing resources carefully.

Government officials have sought to balance concern with reassurance regarding water supplies. The Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply indicated that current reservoir levels remain adequate, noting that stored water in Labugama and Kalatuwawa reservoirs could sustain supply for three months without rainfall. Officials also reported that water levels in the Kelani and Kalu rivers present no immediate risk to supply in the Western Province over the next two months. Mendis added that rainfall conditions are expected to improve after October under El Niño influence, suggesting the situation may be temporary.

The government has initiated coordinated preparedness measures across multiple agencies. The Disaster Management Centre has already mapped water resources and identified water bowsers for potential deployment, with particular emphasis on prioritizing drinking water if agricultural supply challenges emerge. A ministerial subcommittee has been appointed to monitor developments and coordinate the national response. Officials have stated they are preparing all districts for a possible two-month dry spell, drawing on historical data from previous drought periods.

While authorities maintain no severe water shortage is anticipated, they emphasize that careful resource management will be essential should El Niño conditions strengthen as predicted. Continued monitoring of global weather patterns and adaptation of response strategies remains ongoing.
