Sri Lanka is preparing to host an expanded international kite festival in Colombo this week, marking a significant expansion of the annual event. The Derana Digital Colombo International Kite Festival 2026 has grown from a single-day celebration into a comprehensive seven-day programme featuring competitions, workshops, and cultural experiences. Organisers report a 30 percent increase in international participation compared to previous editions, with participants traveling from 30 countries across the globe.
The festival programme encompasses multiple coordinated events throughout the week. Activities include kite-building and flying workshops for children aged 8 to 15, conducted by expert instructors from Australia, France, and China. The schedule features a vintage vehicle parade of nearly 200 classic cars alongside international kite flyers, evening kite displays at Port City Colombo, and what organisers describe as Sri Lanka's first night kite festival with illuminated kites. The main festival day at Galle Face Green will include performances by popular local artists and a concurrent food festival.
Secure execution of the event requires significant coordination among authorities. The Sri Lanka Police has arranged comprehensive security measures, deploying approximately 1,000 officers across various functions including 300 dedicated to traffic management and 200plainclothes personnel. Special parade routes and dedicated parking areas have been designated throughout the city to accommodate expected crowds.
Beyond the competition itself, the festival incorporates cultural elements intended to showcase Sri Lanka's heritage. According to Derana Media Network Chief Operating Officer Madhawa Madawala, the event aims to communicate that "Sri Lanka is open, welcoming, ready to welcome visitors from every corner of the globe." International participants will visit the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy and experience the cultural significance of the Esala Perahera, connecting the festival to broader religious and cultural traditions.
