The Dehiwala–Mount Lavinia Municipal Council has become the first local authority in Sri Lanka to live-stream its General Council meetings, a move aimed at enhancing transparency and public engagement in local governance.

The Dehiwala–Mount Lavinia Municipal Council made history on Wednesday by becoming Sri Lanka's first local authority to live-stream its General Council meetings. The inaugural broadcast began at 9:30 a.m. through the Council's official Facebook page, following unanimous approval from all Council members.

The initiative was proposed by Arkam Muneer, a Municipal Councillor representing the Social Justice Party, which holds a single seat following the 2025 Local Government Election. According to the Council, the live-streaming project is designed to strengthen democratic participation by enabling residents to observe council proceedings, including debates, policy proposals, and discussions by elected representatives as they unfold.

Council officials stated that the move serves multiple objectives, including enhanced transparency, improved accountability, and increased public participation in local governance. By making proceedings accessible to the broader community, the Council aims to bridge the gap between elected officials and constituents. The Social Justice Party acknowledged the collaborative support of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, National People's Power members, opposition councillors, and the entire Council in advancing the proposal.
