Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Israel, Saman Chandrasiri, has formally presented his Letter of Credence to Israeli President Isaac Herzog during a ceremony at Beit HaNassi, the presidential residence in Jerusalem. The event marked the official commencement of Chandrasiri's diplomatic mission to the country.
During the meeting, President Herzog extended welcome remarks to the ambassador and reflected on historical connections between the nations, recalling a previous visit to Sri Lanka by his late father, former Israeli President Chaim Herzog. The Israeli president highlighted the strength of bilateral relations and acknowledged Sri Lankan contributions to Israel's economy, particularly through the workforce. He also noted the appeal of Sri Lanka as a tourist destination among Israeli visitors.
Ambassador Chandrasiri conveyed messages of goodwill from Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and outlined interest in deepening bilateral cooperation. He identified agricultural technology, defence, and trade as priority areas for expanded collaboration, and emphasized that personal connections between citizens of both nations could serve as a foundation for strengthening official ties.
Chandrasiri brings substantial experience to the position, having served in public administration for 25 years. His previous roles include positions within the Ministry of Defence and the Department of Immigration and Emigration, most recently as Manager of Training and Development. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and has worked on capacity-building and international cooperation initiatives.
