Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the Diamond League Final in Brussels with a throw of 89.04 metres, making history as the country's first champion in the elite World Athletics circuit.

Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the men's javelin at the Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 5, securing a throw of 89.04 metres in the third round to claim the title. The victory marks a historic milestone: Tharanga is the first Sri Lankan athlete to win a Diamond League Final championship, and the first from the country to claim a top position at a global competition under World Athletics auspices.

Tharanga's winning effort came despite challenging conditions. According to his own account, cold weather hampered his performance, preventing him from achieving a larger distance. He began the competition modestly with an 80.42-metre opening attempt, followed by 79.73 metres in the second round, before his decisive third-round throw. Poland's Dawid Wegner took silver with a personal best of 87.47 metres, while Trinidad and Tobago's Keshorn Walcott, the former Olympic champion, claimed bronze with a season-best 83.99 metres. The winning margin was 1.57 metres.

Tharanga's Brussels victory caps a dominant 2026 season. He entered the final as the world number one in men's javelin and holds the world-leading mark of 92.62 metres, set in Rome in June. His season has included performances beyond 92 metres and a Commonwealth Games gold medal. According to one source, Tharanga has won 12 of his last 13 competitions, with only one defeat during that sequence earlier in the season.

The 23-year-old expressed satisfaction with the achievement. "Coming from a small country like Sri Lanka, winning a major meet like this," he said, highlighting the significance of the result for Sri Lankan athletics. India's Neeraj Chopra, a notable competitor, did not participate after withdrawing from the event due to injury.
