COLOMBO (News 1st); Türkiye is seeking to deepen its engagement with Sri Lanka across a wide range of sectors, including trade, culture, education, defence and political cooperation, while pursuing an independent and strategically autonomous foreign policy in an increasingly fragmented global landscape, according to the country's Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Dr. Semih Lütfü Turgut.Addressing the evolving nature of international relations, Ambassador Turgut said Türkiye's unique geographical position at the crossroads of continents, cultures and strategic interests has shaped a foreign policy that is both principled and adaptable to changing global realities. He noted that while international organisations such as the United Nations continue to play an important role, their ability to influence state behaviour has diminished in recent decades. According to the Ambassador, divisions within the United Nations Security Council have increasingly limited its effectiveness in responding to major global crises, leading countries to rely more heavily on temporary alliances and flexible partnerships tailored to specific interests.Against this backdrop, Türkiye has embraced a policy of "multi-alignment", aimed at safeguarding national interests without becoming overly dependent on any single global power or geopolitical bloc. Ambassador Turgut said the country's priority is to maintain strategic autonomy while engaging constructively with a range of international partners. He emphasized that Türkiye's role extends beyond the traditional perception of being a bridge between East and West. Instead, he described the country as an autonomous hub capable of navigating global divisions, engaging with competing powers and maintaining an active and independent presence throughout its surrounding regions. The Ambassador also highlighted Türkiye's approach to regional challenges, particularly along its southern borders, where security concerns are balanced with humanitarian engagement and mediation efforts. He stressed that Ankara rejects zero-sum approaches to international relations and believes that major global challenges require collective action.Issues such as climate change, energy transition, migration and technological governance can only be addressed through cooperation, he said, adding that Türkiye seeks to serve as a connector, mediator and responsible stakeholder within the international system.Ambassador Turgut further underscored the importance of stability, transparency and predictable regulations in promoting economic growth and attracting investment. He noted that honouring contracts, ensuring fair procurement practices and maintaining clear regulatory frameworks are essential foundations for sustainable development and international business confidence.Describing strategic autonomy, multi-alignment and proactive diplomacy as the cornerstones of Türkiye's foreign policy, the Ambassador reaffirmed his country's commitment to peace-building and international cooperation during a period marked by growing geopolitical uncertainty. He also singled out Sri Lanka as a strategically important partner in the region, expressing Türkiye's desire to expand bilateral relations in all areas of engagement. These include trade, cultural exchanges, political consultations, defence cooperation and education, reflecting Ankara's broader objective of strengthening ties with Colombo and enhancing collaboration across multiple sectors. The Ambassador said Türkiye looks forward to further advancing its partnership with Sri Lanka, recognizing the island nation's strategic significance and potential role in fostering greater connectivity and cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.
