As part of a long-term strategy to strengthen Sri Lanka’s nursing workforce, the Ministry of Health and Mass Media plans to induct 2,847 nurses into the service through new appointments in October this year, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said. The Minister made this special announcement while addressing the 2021 batch of nursing students as the Chief Guest at the Colombo College of Nursing yesterday, Thursday. According to the Minister, the government’s ultimate goal is to appoint a total of 13,600 new nurses to the National Health Service by 2030, and he expects to achieve 50 percent of that target by the end of this year. Minister Nalinda Jayatissa further stated that, in continuation of this, another 1,949 nurses will be recruited in the health sector in March 2028, followed by another 2,920 nurses in August 2028 through new appointments.
