Former Chief of the State Intelligence Bureau, Suresh Saleh, was arrested in accordance with the country's existing law without any political vendetta, and is being detained and interrogated in accordance with the law, Deputy Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Sunil Wattagala said. He also pointed out that some groups, who are currently politically orphaned, have taken the arrest of Suresh Saleh as a selfish political weapon. The strange actions of shouting for Saleh inside and outside Parliament are only further strengthening the serious allegations against Saleh among the people. The Deputy Minister said this while participating in the adjournment debate on 'Combating the country's drug menace' held in Parliament yesterday (26). He further said, "Our government is adopting very tough and decisive strategies to eradicate the country's drug menace. As a first step, the official residence in Colombo, where former Minister Sarath Fonseka lived during the previous government, has now been converted into a special high-level center to coordinate and carry out national operations against drug abuse. Similarly, the official residence of former State Minister Sehan Semasinghe has been fully entrusted with the special investigative activities of the Criminal Investigation Department. In addition, the government has taken steps to establish special court structures within such official residences in order to expedite the investigation of major drug and corruption cases that have been pending in the country for many years. When the government takes moral action against the culprits without any basis in law, the opposition parties call it political vendetta to cover up their crimes. The current new government will never carry out political vendettas. Following the 2010 presidential election, former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka was imprisoned by the then President Mahinda Rajapaksa through a military court for the sole reason that he contested as the opposition candidate. Not only that, but former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranaike was unconstitutionally removed from office for refusing to rule in accordance with the demands of the Rajapaksa family. This is blatant political vendetta. But today, former Chief of the State Investigation Branch Suresh Saleh has been legally arrested based on the irrefutable evidence against him. He stated that when the law does its duty, no one can get away with standing in its way.
