Police have arrested a suspect accused of gathering sensitive information about prison officers, with investigators linking him to an organized crime network and a deceased inmate from recent prison unrest.
The Sahaspura Police have arrested a man on suspicion of systematically collecting information about prison officers, according to authorities. Investigators allege the suspect maintained close associations with figures connected to organized crime networks operating internationally.
The arrested individual was reportedly a close associate of Mohamed Azman Sherifdeen, an inmate who died during disturbances at the New Magazine Prison. Police indicate the suspect previously worked as a motorcycle rider for Sherifdeen, who was allegedly involved in a double homicide on Watarappala Road in Dehiwala in the previous year. Notably, the suspect had been released on bail just three days before the prison unrest occurred.
During their investigation, police examined the suspect's mobile phone and discovered audio recordings of conversations with an overseas-based organized criminal known as "Kos Malli." According to authorities, these recordings contained gathered intelligence regarding prison officers and included discussions about potential plans to cause them harm. Police have not yet released further details about the specific nature of the information collected or the scope of any broader investigation.
