A 34-year-old Kiranchi resident was apprehended by the Sri Lanka Navy on Monday while attempting to transport a large quantity of sea cucumbers without proper authorization.
Naval personnel from SLNS Buwaneka, operating under the North Central Naval Command, intercepted a traditional fishing vessel near the Kiranchi coast in Kilinochchi on August 24. During an inspection of the suspicious boat, officers discovered the 34-year-old suspect in the process of unloading approximately 380 sea cucumbers onto the shore.
The arrest was made after authorities determined that the individual lacked the necessary permit to transport the marine resources. According to the Navy, the suspect, who is a local resident of Kiranchi, was engaged in the unauthorized transfer of the consignment when discovered.
As part of the enforcement action, authorities seized both the traditional fishing boat and the entire shipment of 380 sea cucumbers. The suspect, vessel, and seized cargo were subsequently handed over to the Kilinochchi Fisheries Inspector to pursue appropriate legal proceedings and determine further charges related to the violation of fisheries regulations.
