The Swadeshi Industrial Works PLC is sponsoring the annual Esala festival lighting ceremonies at two major Kataragama religious sites for the 25th consecutive year, while also distributing educational materials to local schoolchildren.

The Swadeshi Industrial Works PLC, a Sri Lankan herbal and personal care products manufacturer, has illuminated the Kiri Vehera and Ruhunu Kataragama Maha Devalaya during the 2026 Esala festivals under the theme "Swadeshi Khomba Aloka Puja Sathkaraya." The illumination ceremonies ran from July 15 to 29, 2026, marking the company's 25th year of supporting the annual lighting tradition at these prominent places of worship.

According to company leadership, the sponsorship reflects Swadeshi's commitment to preserving Sri Lankan cultural heritage as a locally-owned enterprise. Chairperson Ms. Amari Wijewardene noted that the initiative serves multiple purposes: illuminating the temples for worshippers while also educating younger generations about the importance of protecting the nation's traditions. The ceremonies culminated in a cultural pageant showcasing Sri Lankan customs and history.

To commemorate the milestone, Swadeshi distributed educational tablets to schoolchildren in the Kataragama area and presented alms to priests at Kiri Vehera. The Chief Incumbent of Kirivehera Rajamaha Viharaya, Venerable Kobawaka Dhamminda Thera, presented an appreciation award to Ms. Wijewardene for her 25 years of involvement.

Beyond Kataragama, Swadeshi supports annual lighting ceremonies at approximately 13 other religious sites across Sri Lanka, including Devundara Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya and Sabaragamu Maha Saman Devalaya. The company also operates broader community initiatives focusing on environmental conservation, healthcare awareness, and infrastructure support in dry zone communities.
