Sri Lanka's "Rebuilding Sri Lanka" Task Force met to assess reconstruction efforts and address delays in infrastructure projects and housing restoration in the aftermath of the Ditwah disaster.
The Presidential Task Force overseeing the "Rebuilding Sri Lanka" programme held a meeting at the Presidential Secretariat on August 13, chaired by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. The gathering addressed significant challenges in the nation's recovery efforts, including delays in contracted infrastructure projects and concerns about meeting 2026 reconstruction targets following the Ditwah disaster.
According to Task Force disclosures, substantial financial resources have been mobilized for housing recovery. Rs. 13,505 million has been allocated to assist 50,554 households with partial damage, while Rs. 11,510 million has been designated for 4,918 fully damaged homes. The meeting also examined the restoration timeline for critical infrastructure including highways, railways, and bridges that sustained damage during the disaster.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya instructed officials to conduct field assessments in affected areas to evaluate current recovery conditions and identify remaining obstacles. She emphasized the urgency of restoring normalcy to affected communities and stressed the necessity for coordinated efforts across government agencies and line ministries to ensure efficient implementation of reconstruction plans.
Further action was directed toward accelerating housing construction and resettlement initiatives, with particular attention to families currently sheltering in relief camps. The Prime Minister tasked Task Force members with engaging provincial governors, district coordinators, secretaries, and relevant government institutions to expedite ongoing recovery projects and remove administrative barriers impeding progress.
