The launch of 'The Curious Naturalist' honoured the conservation biologist's decades-long influence on Sri Lankan natural history research and highlighted his legacy of mentoring young scientists.

The release of 'The Curious Naturalist: 127 Essays + Additional five on Sri Lankan Biodiversity' by renowned conservation biologist Dr. Rohan Pethiyagoda transcended a typical book launch, transforming into a broader recognition of his impact on Sri Lanka's scientific community. The event underscored how his decades of work have shaped multiple generations of researchers and conservationists dedicated to protecting the island's exceptional biodiversity.

Speakers at the launch detailed Dr. Pethiyagoda's influence through mentorship and written work. Young naturalist Sanoj Wijayasekara described how discovering the scientist's publications on Sri Lankan amphibians fundamentally altered his career path, eventually leading him to become an amphibian researcher. Wijayasekara noted that Dr. Pethiyagoda's home became an informal hub where young scientists gathered to seek guidance and work through research challenges. Several internationally recognised researchers, including Dr. Kelum Manamendra-Arachchi and Prof. Madhava Meegaskumbura, have advanced their careers through this mentorship network, collectively discovering numerous previously unknown species across multiple animal groups.

Wildlife and Nature Protection Society President Graham Marshall noted the book generated substantial public interest prior to its launch. He highlighted that Dr. Pethiyagoda is donating all proceeds to the WNPS, Sri Lanka's oldest conservation organisation. Marshall emphasised that the book succeeds by encouraging readers to reconsider familiar natural phenomena with renewed curiosity, potentially serving audiences ranging from families and schools to academic institutions and future conservationists.

Marshal stressed that meaningful conservation requires collaboration across multiple sectors, anchored in scientific knowledge. He positioned 'The Curious Naturalist' as a resource that could inspire broader engagement with Sri Lanka's natural heritage and strengthen the country's conservation efforts.
