Construction of three bridges along the Orugodawatta-Ambatale road is advancing as planned, with two expected to finish by year-end and a third by mid-2027. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion on this key 7.7-kilometre route connecting to Colombo.
Three major bridge construction projects on the Orugodawatta-Ambatale main road are proceeding according to schedule as part of a broader effort to alleviate traffic pressures on this important corridor linking the area to Colombo. The No. 2/3 Kalu Bridge and No. 9/1 Bridge, which commenced work in January 2025, are targeted for completion before the close of 2026. Meanwhile, construction of the No. 4/1 Bridge began in February 2026 and is projected to be finished by May 2027.
The three bridge projects represent a significant infrastructure investment, with a combined estimated cost of Rs. 1.546 billion. This funding comes through assistance from the OPEC Fund for International Development and the Saudi Fund for Development. The Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development is overseeing the initiative, with the Road Development Authority managing implementation and ELS Construction executing the bridge work.
The 7.7-kilometre road upgrade targets multiple congestion points, including junctions at Orugodawatta, Wellampitiya, Kotikawatta, Angoda, Galwana and Ambatale. Eight bridges along the route were identified for development, with five already completed. The full bridge programme carries a total cost estimate of Rs. 2.5 billion. Beyond bridge construction, an additional Rs. 4.2 billion allocation has been announced for road carpeting work, according to RDA Project Director I.K. Baddegama. Upon completion, these improvements are expected to reduce travel delays and enhance connectivity for residents and businesses in surrounding areas.
