A student has carried out a shooting at a secondary school in Thailand's Nonthaburi province, killing at least three teachers and three students. The suspected gunman remains in critical condition, with over a dozen others wounded in one of the country's deadliest school shootings in recent years.
A shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in the Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi province, north of Bangkok, resulted in at least six deaths on Friday morning. According to police spokesperson Lieutenant General Trairong Phiwphan, three of the deceased were students and three were teachers. The attack also left at least 15 people wounded, with two reported to be in critical condition. The incident unfolded at the secondary school, which serves approximately 3,000 students and is located along a busy highway.
Footage from inside classrooms showed students huddled beneath desks in distress as gunfire erupted nearby, while other video documented evacuations taking place as staff members guided students from the building. The shooter, who is believed to be a student at the school, remains alive despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise. Trairong confirmed the suspect is currently receiving emergency medical treatment in critical condition.
Police have recovered a single handgun and ammunition from the school premises. While investigators believe the firearm belonged to a family member of the suspected gunman, authorities have not yet established how the student obtained access to the weapon. Trairong noted that the suspect had been residing with adult relatives rather than with his parents. Thailand's Central Investigation Bureau indicated that the immediate situation has been brought under control.
This incident ranks among Thailand's most severe school shootings in recent memory. The country experiences relatively high civilian gun ownership compared to neighbouring Southeast Asian nations, with approximately 15 firearms per 100 people according to 2017 data. Thailand also records the second-highest number of gun homicides in Southeast Asia after the Philippines. Previous school shooting incidents in Thailand include a 2022 massacre at a childcare centre that killed 36 people, and a February shooting in Hat Yai that claimed one teacher's life.
