ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming, 43, has become Asia's wealthiest individual with an estimated net worth of $105.5 billion, surpassing Indian billionaire Gautam Adani. The shift reflects growing wealth generation in technology and artificial intelligence sectors.

Zhang Yiming, co-founder of ByteDance—the parent company of TikTok—has overtaken Indian billionaire Gautam Adani to become the richest person in Asia, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Zhang's estimated net worth stands at $105.5 billion, compared with Adani's $104.8 billion. The change reflects significant momentum in technology-driven wealth creation, particularly within social media and artificial intelligence sectors.

Zhang's fortune has grown substantially over recent years, increasing more than eightfold from $13 billion in March 2019. In September alone, his wealth rose by more than $12 billion following updated valuations of ByteDance from major investment firms including BlackRock, Fidelity Investments and T. Rowe Price. Bloomberg applies a 10% risk discount to ByteDance valuations due to the company's privately held status.

In contrast, Adani's wealth has declined from its peak of approximately $120 billion in June, a shift attributed to stock market index rebalancing and broader market pressures related to higher oil prices and bond yields. ByteDance has expanded aggressively beyond social media into artificial intelligence, developing products such as the Doubao chatbot and Seedance video-generation tool. Zhang's ascent comes after years of regulatory and geopolitical uncertainty surrounding TikTok's operations in the United States, which the company navigated through operational restructuring earlier this year.

Bloomberg's rankings are based on estimated net worth and fluctuate with market movements and company valuations. The shift in Asia's wealth rankings underscores how AI-related businesses are generating fortunes that increasingly compete with those built in traditional industries such as energy and retail.
