Jaffna State Attorney Maradalingam Pratheepan has explained the situation in which the public is waiting in long queues at the Jaffna Regional Office of the Inland Revenue Department to obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) in Jaffna.
Following the congestion prevailing at the Jaffna Regional Office of the Inland Revenue Department located on Kankesanthurai Road in recent days, the State Attorney discussed the matter with the Regional Commissioner over the phone yesterday.
In a statement issued to the public following this,
It has been clarified that no deadline has been announced yet for the mandatory obtaining of the TIN number by June 30th.
Furthermore, it has been warned that the Inland Revenue Department does not charge any fee for obtaining a TIN and that receiving or giving money for this is a punishable offense under the law.
It has been informed that those who have already registered for TIN can obtain the certificate by submitting their National Identity Card, and those who have not yet registered can register through the website www.ird.gov.lk or by completing and submitting the application form at the Inland Revenue Department office.
It has been announced that TIN certificates for new registrants will be sent by post, and for further information, they can contact the telephone number 021 221 7333.
Therefore, the Jaffna Government Agent has requested the public not to be unnecessarily nervous or panicked regarding TIN.
