Marvel's 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' has surpassed 'Avatar: The Way of Water' to become the highest-grossing Hollywood film ever released in India, reaching USD 52.8 million within 11 days.
Marvel Studios' latest Spider-Man installment has achieved a significant milestone in India's box office history. 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day', directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and featuring Tom Holland, has accumulated USD 52.8 million since its release, according to Deadline. The film earned USD 10.6 million over its opening weekend alone, surpassing the previous record held by James Cameron's 'Avatar: The Way of Water' in a notably quick timeframe of just 11 days.
The film's performance was bolstered by an exceptionally strong opening. According to Variety, the movie generated Rs 72.44 crore on its opening day, establishing a new benchmark for non-Indian films in the country. This opening day collection surpassed the previous record set by 'Avengers: Endgame', with nearly one million moviegoers visiting theatres on opening Thursday.
The Spider-Man release has faced minimal competition from other major releases in India, though films including Sunny Deol's 'Batwara 1947' and Emraan Hashmi's 'Awarapan 2' are scheduled for theatrical release. Meanwhile, other Hollywood films have also performed strongly at the Indian box office in recent times, with Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' and 'Obsession' each earning over USD 10 million.
The film features an ensemble cast including Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo. This latest Spider-Man outing continues Holland's involvement with the character, which began with 'Captain America: Civil War' in 2016.
